Don’t Visit Car Dealers in times of special sales events which are solicited by direct mail. This is because such events are often hosted by contracted specialists. The aim of these special sales is to increase a dealer’s profit, and you would definitely not want to waste extra money

Don’t Visit dealers at high traffic times. As this time is not favourable for any negotiation. You must try approaching the dealer on weekdays if possible.

Don’t buy unnecessary extras including corrosion protection, paint sealant, fabric protection, and window etching of the vehicle ID number. The reason why you should go for them is that it is just a way to make extra money out you. Moreover, you generally do not require these services and can get them later at a cheaper price.

Don’t purchase an extended warranty on vehicles having a good reliability record. A survey conducted by Consumer Reports in 2013, stated that nearly 55 percent of the owners hadn’t used the benefits of extended warranty during the lifetime of the policy. Moreover, the average price they paid for the coverage was just around $1,200. So there’s absolutely no need to purchase extended warranty.

Don’t drive the car home before completing the financial paperwork. Often these cases resulted in so-called “yo-yo” or “spot” deliveries. In these cases, the dealer calls the buyer back and claims financing fell through. And in most of the cases, it turns out to be just a way to get the customer sign new paperwork at less favorable terms.

Don’t take delivery of the car if there is some additional work which needs to be done on it. These additional works may include repair or accessory installation. And if the dealer goes out of business, then it will turn out to be very difficult to get the work done.

Do visit your dealer at the end of the month. It is the time when it is most likely that the dealer is in need of meeting their numbers.

Do inspect the car properly and go for a test drive  before buying. Ensure that the car is in a proper working condition and has all the features to desire. You must thoroughly scan your car, especially if you’re planning to buy a pre-owned luxury model. Go for a diagnostic scan, as it will reveal a multitude of potentially concealed issues faster. You must also opt for a pre-purchase inspection. This pre-purchased inspection is cheap and also worth going for. You are obviously paying a high amount for the car, be it a new or a used one. So double sure yourself that all the features are working and there are no faults that might bring your back to the service center in just a few weeks.

Do familiarize yourself with the features of the model you are looking for and then go to the dealer. Clearly let the dealer know what range of cars, you’re looking for. This will help save the time for both, you and the dealer

Do walk out when repeatedly offered high prices that are beyond your budget. Be ready to walk away.

Do cross out extras- Be sure to cross out the extras in the contract that you haven’t agreed to pay for.

Do bring a calculator to verify that the terms are matching the amount that you’ve agreed to. Sometimes dealers pad the monthly payments in order to add extras into the contract.

Do pay the down payment with a credit card. In that case, if the dealer goes out of business before you have picked up your car, then you can easily challenge the payment made to the dealer. Make sure that you don’t sign any forms with any column left blank. This is to ensure that the dealership doesn’t falsify your information for their benefits.
